On June 12th, the trendy suburb of Bandra in Mumbai played host to a pop-up event featuring the Indian designer Pratyush Kumar and his brand, Pieux. Held at the multi-designer store Curato, the evening was a delightful blend of art and fashion, showcasing Kumar’s latest collection, ‘Canvas.’ Inspired by great artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, and S.H Raza, this collection is a testament to Kumar’s ability to blend the worlds of fine art and contemporary fashion.
“Pieux Pleats and Pieux original garments are inspired by the brushstrokes of artists like Van Gogh and Monet. We’ve created original artwork, printed digitally on textiles, explains Kumar. “Some outfits feature applique work, and our Pieux Haat collection includes Bagru block prints inspired by S.H Raza. Pieux Stripes explores unique styles with surplus textiles, currently offered in limited quantities as we develop our winterwear.”
Our favourite piece was a shirt featuring a dazzling array of swirling blues and yellows, evoking the mesmerizing movement of “Starry Night.” Each brushstroke-inspired line on the fabric seemed to pulse with life. The pop-up collection also featured a variety of pleated bomber jackets and trousers. The lenticular fabric added a dynamic texture, allowing the vibrant hues to shift and change with each movement, echoing the play of light. Another standout was a shirt combining patterns and textures, seamlessly blending repurposed blue and white pinstriped fabric with panels of crisp white. The geometric arrangement of the stripes lent the shirt a modern, architectural feel, while the soft pleats of the white fabric at the bottom added a touch of elegance and fluidity.
Kumar’s ‘Canvas’ collection is not just a fusion of art and fashion but also a celebration of creativity and craftsmanship. Each piece invites you to experience the vibrancy and dynamic essence of the artworks that inspired them, making it a truly unique addition to any wardrobe.
