Anavila Takes Us on a Journey with PAYANAM

At the Chettinad Heritage Festival this year, Anavila Misra, the visionary behind the eponymous label Anavila, brought her latest collection, PAYANAM, to life. Known for redefining the sari with pure linen and sustainable handloom techniques, Anavila continues to push the boundaries of tradition and modernity.

PAYANAM, which means “journey” in Tamil, takes its cues from the rich, opulent history of Chettinad in Tamil Nadu. Inspired by the majestic mansions, intricate architecture, and the luxurious lifestyle of the Chettiar community, the collection is a blend of cultural heritage and contemporary elegance. Think European influences, vibrant gemstones, and the famous Athangudi tiles—all woven into the narrative through striking hand-woven textures and bold checkered patterns.

At its core, the collection celebrates the beauty of sustainable fashion. Monochromatic linens, metallic zari, and intricate hand embroidery bring a sense of luxury to every piece, while traditional South Indian sari designs are reimagined with modern flair. The result? A collection that not only honors Chettinad’s grand past but also feels relevant and wearable today.

And it wasn’t just the textiles that stole the show. The jewelry, designed by Meenu Subbiah, drew from ancient Chettinad temple motifs, offering a contemporary twist on traditional pieces.

The verdict? We like!
