cM Review: Bab Al Shams, Dubai

cM Review: Bab Al Shams, Dubai

There are hotels, and then there are experiences. The newly revamped Bab Al Shams offers a luxurious escape from the frenetic pace of Dubai. Just an hour’s drive from the city, this desert resort is a true gateway to the sun. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported into a Bedouin-inspired era. Encircled by endless deserts and conveniently near an 80km cycling track (for those fitness enthusiasts) that feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, this hotel is perfect for anyone seeking a unique Arabian oasis. Here’s our honest review on our stay:

Check in: 9/10

Despite the bustling check-in area (it was the Eid Weekend), the staff were quick on their feet. We were ushered to a separate seating area and handed refreshing beverages, setting a relaxed tone right from the start.

Rooms: 8/10

Our room was a spacious delight with a private balcony. Though daytime heat made it less inviting (temperatures outside were 49-50 C), the balcony added a sense of airiness. Minor gripe: basic amenities like toothpaste and an iron had to be requested for. But those gigantic beds? Pure heaven. #dontwakemeup

Dining: 7/10

Breakfast at Zala was a feast for everyone. Lunch at Anwa, the hotel’s pan-Asian gem, was delightful indoors, away from the heat. Dinner at Ninive Bab Al Shams was a sublime mix of traditional Middle Eastern flavours. The poolside menu had limited options, but sipping frozen margaritas by the water made up for it. So far, we’ve been loving it! Albeit room service was a letdown; a simple aglio e olio was a no-go, which felt off for a five-star spot.

Privacy: 10/10

The design of the rooms and the winding pathways made us feel blissfully secluded. Our private balcony, surrounded by desert palms, was a tranquil retreat. The only time we encountered others was in the common areas like the pool and restaurants. Perfect hotel for the quiet R&R you need.

Experiences: 10/10

From camel rides to spa treatments and exhilarating dune bashing, Bab Al Shams has it all.  For the adventurous, activities like hot air balloon rides, archery, horse riding are available, perfect for those brave enough venture into the sun. My days were delightfully spent lounging by the infinity pool with its breathtaking dessert views, and playing paddle tennis in the dessert. The sunsets? Absolutely magnifique. Booking activities was a breeze, and our dune bashing adventure was top-notch.

Check out: 6/10

The check-out process was smooth; however, there was a hiccup: our car, left to bake in the sun for two days, was scorching hot. As a result, the first 15 minutes of the drive back felt like a desert survival challenge. Nevertheless, the staff’s thoughtful touch of providing chilled bottled water and wet face towels did help ease the discomfort.

Conclusion: Would I go back? Hell yes!
